Early in 1985 Jerry Stehman got a tip there was a sporting goods business for sale. The business was basically bankrupt and completely rundown, but Jerry did his research and decided to purchase it. At the time, Jerry sold a variety of sporting goods equipment but Jerry wanted to find a niche “so I made a commitment to the shooting sports industry…” and he never looked back.
Jerry’s Outdoor Sports would stay in that run down old gas station for 4 more years. Next they moved to where the Frame Depot is now over by Sam’s Club (long before it was Sam’s Club) for another 7 years, gradually and continually accumulating loyal customers and friends along the way. Then they moved into the 4600 square foot corner of the little strip mall at 30 road and the business loop where they lasted 16 years.
In 2012 Jerry and his wife Renee took a leap of faith and purchased the building across the street. After some extensive renovations to the space, 2999 North Avenue has become a place Jerry’s Outdoor Sports can really call home. He increased his staff, updated his software, expanded his inventory and has continued to grow ever since.
30 years and still kickin’…
Our proven track record spans over 30 years and mainly is attributed to Jerry’s perserverance and his dedication to superior customer service. He stresses that his resources go toward creating the best experience possible for those who visit the store.
“People like to shop locally and they’ll choose to do so if you give them a good reason.”
He also credits much of the business’ success in the highly competitive local market to hiring employees who share customers’ enthusiasm for firearms, hunting and shooting sports.
Jerry and Renee are a homegrown success story. They bring the mentality of “your friendly hometown” gun store to work with them everyday. They have made lifelong friendships through their business and will continue to build their loyal customer base for a long time to come.
